Elwood-My Little Bird of Glory
September 20th, 2012
Well, I made it home from Wisconsin. The trip was one of my
best so far. Having the whole week surrounded by family and friends
made me whole again. I think I really needed that trip, it gave me much
more focus and strength. I caught myself getting off the beaten track
here lately and I knew this trip was very much needed. Sometimes I get
overloaded with duties as a mom, wife, and many other things, so I knew
it was time.
I write today in a more solemn manner, actually I am quite numb as I type. After a very happy and fulfilling week, Dan let me know last night on the way home from the airport that my conure Elwood had died. He actually died last Thursday, the day after I left. They didn't tell me sooner because I was on vacation.
Elwood was my little buddy, almost like a child. He went everywhere I went in the house. He enjoyed car rides, visiting family, and even managed to be in a couple of my silly YouTube videos. I am totally crushed by this and could hardly sleep all night.
The day after I left, Dan took all three of my birds and the two cages out to the lanai. Elwood, who was more like a free bird that hangs out atop of his cage, climbed over to the second cage to the taller perch. Nothing unusual.
Moments later, Dan was in the kitchen and could hear the birds screaming. He peered out the glass doors to the lanai and a hawk was on top of the cage with Elwood in his grasp. Dan ran out and the hawk flew off. Dan continued to run out to the backyard as the hawk touched down in the grass. Dan could tell the hawk did not have a tight grip on Elwood so he lunged at the hawk from just feet away as Elwood screamed and fought. The hawk again took off with Elwood barely clinched in his talons.
Elwood's screams continued as the hawk flew out of site.
Dan continued to run further to the back of our property as the hawk landed once again, this time on our fence line. Dan could now tell that the hawk had a much stronger grip on Elwood. Again, the hawk flew away, this time way up into trees, much further away.
Dan continued towards the next road behind our property as he followed the cry of Elwood, but by the time he made it to the tree where the hawk landed, Elwood was dead, limp under his grasp.
The hawk seemed to be toying with Dan at this point as it flew back towards our house into our neighbors lawn. Dan came back up to the house and the hawk descended down towards him and landed on a tree just high enough to get his attention. Dan looked up as the hawk and made eye contact as he continued to hold Elwood's lifeless little body. Seconds later, the hawk swooped down towards Dan letting him know that he had conquered not only Elwood, but Dan too.
Rest in Peace Elwood, I will miss you greatly.
