Burgers and Fries and Cherry Pies

April 24th, 2013

Good news! We can go out and buy our fellow commissioners and directors some breakfast, lunch, or just a glass of iced tea! Yeah! Maybe I should have waited another week to buy Commissioner Fiala some lunch, hey!

The new ordinance is great. I have been out numerous times in circumstances where I wanted to simply pick up the tab, but the old ethics ordinance continued to stand in my way. Not any longer!
Last week I went out with Commissioner Fiala to a very nice lunch at the Sam Sneads at Lely Resort.

We have been wanting to get together for quite some time now, but this past season has been overwhelming for the both of us.

Donna and I both share a big compassion. And that's our surrounding communities, the kids, and our parks. Especially the parks and what we both would like to see happen. I want our future Big Corkscrew Island Regional Park, she wants a pool at Eagle Lakes Park. We plan on putting our heads together to make them both happen.

Overall, we both agreed that with growth accelerating from new developments, impact fees will be coming in and District 5 will next up for a new park. Her idea to build her pool will be focused on surrounding developers. She simply wants to ask for donations to give back to the community. Why not focus on working with the many developers that seem to be popping up left and right? If she plays her cards right, she may get that pool sooner than she thinks. Built right next to her future community center that is ready to built soon as well.

I feel the same way. We are going on almost 9 months into trying to get our Friends of Big Corkscrew Island Regional Park's non profit status moving along, and her idea also mimics what we want to do. We too want to request donations from local developers when the non profit is finally approved. Apply for grants as well. We have to start thinking outside the box, because really, there is no money to build this park. And we need $11 million bucks!

More into the enjoying our lunch as we watched the golfers below, Donna had these really cool ideas about fundraisers at our new park once the new boat ramp is completed at the end of this year. I can use the Friends of Big Corkscrew Island Park business to not only promote, but to raise money by having miniature boat races, fishing tournaments, alligator wrestling, and more! (Ha! I was kidding about the alligator wrestling). Don't worry Barry, I promise to be good. :)

The lunch was great, but ended a bit short. As we both headed to tour the parks in her district, unfortunately Donna had a flat tire so we needed to take care of that. We went ahead and toured the parks in my van first, then I drove her to her house so she could call AAA. As she was on the phone, I just snooped around observing all of her baskets she collects around the house. And what an adorable house. Total country cozy feel. Very nice Donna. We stayed for a bit then headed out back the Lely to meet with AAA. They were already there by the time we got there and took care of her lickity split.
Thanks Donna, I had a great time. And next time, lunch is on me!
