Turkey Turds and Rainwater

November 16th, 2011

Looks as though the Kniolas are preparing for a holiday Thanksgiving, filled with plenty of turkey turds and rainwater!

Yes, it's true, we now own two adorable, yet really ugly turkeys. I specifically rounded them up for my husbands birthday since it was coming up soon. I figured since they were only three months old, they would be small enough to hide until his actually birthday.

Well, I was wrong! When I arrived to pick them up with my two youngest, I just about fell over dead. They already stood two feet tall!

My mind swirled around in shock over their sizes as I wondered how was I going to fit them in this little box filled with hay? How was I going to drive them in my van if they flew around crashing into windows? I knew I was in for an interesting ride home.

The boys helped me pick out just the right two as a flock of 12 to 14 other adult turkeys gobble, gobble, and gobbled some more as they followed their owners every move. Everywhere he went, they went too. Too funny!

We could not help but stop by and pet a couple of his cows and a little pony, along with a goat named Princess who was jingle-jangling around as dozens of chickens strutted along beside her.
The ride home was actually very calm. Both boys had to hold them down hard because of their strength as they peeped the whole way. We played with different names and Tom and Jerry seemed a perfect fit.

I managed to get them into the pen but with quite a fight. They were very strong and immediately wanted to fly out. I had my youngest fetch me some scissors as I clipped their wings right away. That would have been awful if they flew away the first day! More than likely never to be seen again. I plan to keep them penned for a couple of weeks, then they can free range.

Well, I knew I would never be able to hide these large babies for too long. I had about ten days before Dan's birthday. How was I going to hide them? How was I going to even tell him I bought two turkeys?

I didn't even know if he really wanted them. Maybe it was just me that wanted them.
So the next morning everything was going good. Dan woke up, got his usual cup of coffee and wandered the pool deck to view the backyard like he does every morning. Next thing you know, he's in the house quicker than you can say turkey turds and rainwater, showing complete astonishment, eyes wide open sputtering out, " Did you know there are two big turkeys in the pen?"

"Happy Birthday" I rang out in cheer! "Surprise!"

Oh, he was surprised alright, a little shocked, but overall, he seems pretty happy.

Happy Birthday Dan! I hope you enjoy the many years of fresh turkey turds and rainwater! And then some.

Gobble Gobble!
