Red Flags in Stabbing Death

January 26th, 2011

As I, my family, and really our whole neighborhood still being in shock over the death of Dylan Nuno, this mornings newspaper about the stabbing became even more overwhelming with dismay.
Talk about a story full of red flags for everyone involved. I will point out my red flags, though I am sure there are plenty more I may have missed, but please remember, I still in no way condone the actions of Jorge Saaveedra.

So the article titled, "Witness describe stabbing" starts off with the kids on the bus pushing to make this fight happen. I don't understand what is going through our kids today, why can't they learn to get along and leave each other alone. Why do kids feel so compelled to want to watch let alone provoke something so sinister?

Then we read further into the story about the bus driver. By the way, my article yesterday I stated that I made a call into the bus transportation emergency hot-line, left a message, and still almost 24 hours in, no return call.

So it reads the bus driver allowed the students to exit the stop well before their homes. Not specific enough, what students? Just the two involved or the many that encouraged the fight? And if it were Jorge's Saavedra's stop, why in God's name would the bus driver even think twice about letting Dylan off there when I am sure by then he knew tensions were mounting. No excuse!

So Dylan delivered the first blow, do we now have a self defense case before us? Knife or no knife? Again, I do not condone the knife or Jorge Saavedra's actions in this senseless death. Remember, these are solely my thoughts and opinions.

Who is this student by the name of Ruben Cervantes that was there who attends Beacon High School? Where did he come from, why was he there? He must have known the two, he is describing both of them with names in his comments. Was this fight premeditated? Was he there for back up? And for whom? By the way, Beacon High School is located off of Estey Ave. in Naples.
"He's a quiet kid", states a neighbor describing Jorge Saavedra. Quiet kids make me nervous. But once again, remind you, my opinion only!
Saavedra being picked on at school is the biggest red flag here. No wonder he was quiet, his self esteem consistently knocked down day after day. Now who was doing the picking at school? We have yet to find out, or then again, we may never find out. But is clearly states Dylan Nuno and his friends called him names and threw crumpled balls of paper at him.

I can clearly understand why Jorge Saavedra was reluctant to go to school, did anyone at the school talk to him, help him in any way? Parents? Was the Dean involved with this matter at school? Wasn't it a clear sign of need when he was escorted to school by the deputies as he struggled to go into school? This describes a perfect opportunity that could have been looked into a little further on behalf of Saavedras welfare?

Jorge Saavedra had been brushing off all the instances of being picked on over and over until he reached his boiling point, enough to decide to bring a knife to school for self defense? Again, I do not condone his actions, my opinions only.

I just wished something more by anyone could have been done to prevent any of this from happening. I truly do believe all of this could have been prevented by someone if they stepped in a little further. How can we as a community figure this out? We obviously need to consider something? But what? Community emergency meeting on bullying? Just a thought.

So that's enough to make some comments pour in on my red flags. You may or may not agree but that's why I write, I like to see everyone's view, good or bad. And I thank you for your reading.
On behalf of the Nuno family, our deepest condolences to you and your family for your loss.
