Bio of Tim Nance

June 21st, 2012

A couple of weeks ago, I went out for breakfast with Tim Nance. I have known Tim for some time now through the GGEACA meetings, but had yet to get inside his head and learn more about him and his ambitions with our community. So I invited him out to breakfast and I am very glad I did. I was not only impressed with Tim and the work he has accomplished with Gargulio, but his very impressive background in education, business and charity work.

We talked for hours and hit on every aspect of our community that came to mind. Just for my own self and for those who do read my blogs, I felt knowing more about Tim was very important since he is running for Commissioner in our district. Many people see his signs everywhere and may catch of glimpse of him out and about, but do they really know anything about him? Well, I plan to lay that all out for you today.
Here goes:

Tim Nance
A Native Floridian, Tim grew up in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida where his father, L. Clayton Nance, served as the first Public Defender in the S.E. United States and later as a Broward County Circuit Judge. Tim attended the University of Florida, receiving two Bachelor's degrees, one in Political Science and a second in Agriculture. He is also a graduate of the UF Certificate Program in Environmental Studies. Following graduation in 1982, Tim and his wife Gayle decided to move permanently to Collier County.

Tim spent the majority of his professional career as a manager with Gargiulo, Inc., one of the largest growers and marketers of fresh market tomatoes in the world, and one of Collier Counties largest employers. There he served in a variety of capacities including Manager of Greenhouse and Ornamental Operations and Director of Operations for the Eastern United States.

In total, Tim has worked in agribusiness management for over 35 years with a variety of intensively cultivated and high value crops as both an operations manager an as a private consultant. He has worked developing management systems for the production of fruits, vegetables, ornamental plants, and flowering crops. His knowledge and skill in horticulture, coupled with his extraordinary ability to effectively communicate, enabled Tim to help manage and build successful businesses in regions throughout Florida, the eastern U.S., California, the Caribbean, Mexico, and the Middle East.

Actively involved with environmental issues and food safety management, Tim participated professionally with the University of Florida Vegetable Advisory Committee, the Florida Fruit and Vegetable Association, the Florida Nursery, Growers, and Landscape Association, and The Produce Marketing Association.

Tim and his wife Gayle, a 35 year school teacher, live on 14 acres in eastern Collier County. A strong proponent of private and community involvement, Tim has been active in a variety of civic and service organizations and community charities. Tim has been recognized as a leader by many. In speaking with Tim that day, he also gave me a better idea of how he feels about his commitments and what he stands for in his own words.

Tim Nance stands for open, ethical government. The whole truth. Providing complete information to the public during discussion of complex issues. Ending selective disclosure and back room dealing.
Making Collier County competitive again to revitalize our economy and
re-establishing a business friendly environment to allow businesses to thrive and create jobs.

Eliminating excessive impact fees, ordinances, regulations, and process. I believe prosperity is the product of a free market economy and a minimum of government regulations.
Honor our commitment to current residents, taxpayers, and communities.

A government that is citizen and community driven and responsive to community needs.
An end to top-down agendas that benefit special interests. I believe that planning for the future is essential, but the needs of our current citizens should always come first.

Better business management in local government. Reforming our out of control culture of tax and borrow and spend. Government that is smarter and more efficient. Government with more business discipline regarding spending, fixed costs, and debt. Management that delivers results and good value to the people.

Elevating our standards of conduct. My personal and professional accountability
treating citizens with respect. Higher ethics standards for county employees, vendors, and consultants with potential conflicts of interest. Public service based on honesty, integrity, and service above self.
Term Limits for all elected officials. I personally pledge to serve no more than 2 terms in office.
